Patterns and variations of patterns are endless. Holly utilizes four main pattern types and creates variations of them. Below you will find more information which may help you in your buying and shopping experience.
LOG CABIN
The Classic Log Cabin quilt pattern incorporates strips ("logs") of fabric radiating away from the center ("chimney") square. The Log Cabin quilt pattern has been a long standing favorite over the years due to the simplicity of the design as well as its versatility. In many of the old quilts the center square was red. This was to symbolize the hearth of the home. Though the quilt was a favorite for years because it was a wonderful pattern for using up scraps of fabric, quilters today for the most part plan their log cabin quilts with great care and purchase the fabric specifically for the quilt.
The overall effect of the log cabin quilt is achieved by the use of light and dark fabrics and how they are arranged. Variations include the Offset Log Cabin in which the strips are of varying width to achieve a "wave" effect and Raising the Barn Log Cabin in which the blocks are arranged to form a diamond.

TRIP AROUND THE WORLD
The Trip Around the World pattern is a stunning eye-catcher with radiant flow of color, shaded light to dark for best effect. This pattern consists of small squares of fabric sewn together to create a large diamond of cascading fabrics. It is oftentimes contained by one or more borders. The small squares are often quilted near the seams and corners. When only plain fabrics are used, this pattern is called the Sunshine and Shadow.

IRISH CHAIN
The Irish Chain is a popular pattern developed of course, in Ireland. Variations of this pattern were created in the mid 1800's and were pieced from worn and discarded clothing. One of the most universally known quilt patterns is the Irish Chain. There are 'Single Irish Chains', 'Double Irish Chains' and 'Triple Irish Chains', they are all alike except for one or two or three rows of blocks that form the chain.

LOVER'S KNOT
Simple in concept, but complex in overall appearance, the Lover's Knot pattern is a step up from the Log Cabin. Not to be confused with a pattern called "True Lover's Knot," this is quite simple to make. Only four different fabrics are needed. Two different blocks are created with two generally contrasting centers. The centers of the "A" block fit in a "knot" with the matching outer edge of the "B" blocks. This creates two different knots. The "A" blocks & "B" blocks of the Lover's Knot come together quickly and easily.
